That looks like a half mortise lock to me, typical of the 19th century. I think we need to see some good clear pics of the hardware and the back side.

Was told thing was too heavy to keep moving around and we have other sh#@ to move :o so those pic's are what I was able to get.

As for the hidden drawer,, I would bet it was used for either serving pieces of silverware or knives and cutlery !!
