antique cast iron decorative fencing (?)
« on: July 29, 2012, 07:21:30 pm »
Hi folks! A friend of ours is moving away and offered to sell this to us. Ended up trading about $250 worth of stuff to her for it. Ive seen this stuff at flee markets and they always charge a fortune for it so I was wondering if anyone could help me date this (all she said was it was "the real deal", hoping that means OLD) and help me with a value. Its in 3 pieces right now so I have some minor repairs to make it one solid piece. stands 7' tall and is about 6' long with a leaf and acorn theme. Looking forward to hear your thoughts! Thanks for lookin!

Can see the bottom of the arch but the rest looks jumbled !!  Can you lay the pieces where they will go ??

as far as I can tell this is how the pieces go  ??? Maybe it was 2 separate pieces someone did jumble together.. 3 of the 4 triangle shaped corner pieces are not attached, just kind of guessed where they went. the top left corner piece (second pic down) is the only one attached. Figured Id use the other 3 to strengthen the corners I have to repair unless anyone knows where they go?

Hard to say about value, since so many of these patterns were used for decades on end. I've seen buildings in New York with wrought iron like this that date to the 1840s, and there's a house down the street from me here in Missouri with wrought iron porch supports similar to this that dates to the 1940s. Wrought iron was big from the mid 20th century years.

However, presuming that yours is antique (100+ years old) and not just vintage, then you traded well. The problem is that so much wrought iron was made for specific applications that it is difficult to just transfer it to another one, i.e. a different house, because it has to be altered to fit it's new use.

So I'd be happy with your trade and call it good. If you're trying to sell the wrought iron, I'd check out e-bay for comparables; it's hard to put a dollar value on it unless you're selling it by the pound for scrap. The work is pretty enough that I'd hate to see that! :)

Something belongs at the top,, can see the brackets !!  If you are missing those takes some away from the value !!
If you can weld maybe you have enough pieces for a gate ??  That would help,, or is there one ??  A complete gate and arch could be used in several applications !!

Definitely thinking it was two separate parts now,  heres some more pics. Is there anyway to really tell how old it is? Im thinking Il weld it all up and cut a gate out of the doorway, seems pretty easy on paper but well have to see. Wish I had the arch ( if it did indeed have one ) but once we get the vines growing itl look really good  Il post up in Projects when I get it done unless someone wants to move this thread for me  ;) thanks!

The first pic, rt side shows two triangular pieces,, where do they go ?? I would put those at each side at the top !! Then take the vertical section and use it to make the gate, Should have enough of the floral section to go between the pieces at top !!  Hope youi can understand what I am talking about !!  Then you would have a complete gate with crest at top and gate !!  Would take a lot of work though !!

As I mentioned above, wrought iron was big in the mid 20th century, so Occam's Razor suggests that is how old it is. It could be older, but I'm not enough of an expert to say without being there.

That could be fashioned into a beautiful piece for a garden. Like an arbor or gateway.

I am thinking mid century too !!  I can remember late 50`s and 60`s every house had similar metalwork on the porch !!  Ours was quite similar to this pattern !!  Not right style for anything older !!

Nice pieces.  Hard to tell...there are so many repros out there as well and they have perfected the ability to rust and age pieces here in my neck of the woods.

The style looks alot like that seen often in the 30's - 50's....but can't say for sure with out more background.

Bottom line, are you happy with it.  I would definitely enjoy it in my garden!

When I lived in New York I was surprised to find out that wrought iron had been used on Greek Revival rowhouses from the 1840s! Until then I had truly thought it was 20th century only.  ;)

just took one of the corner pieces up to they antique store today for an estimate and my ears lit up when she said " late 1800's to early 1900's"!  The pattern is oak leaves and acorns and definitely not a repro. I only took in the corner pieces and got a quote of $75 to $90 apiece for just them!! whole setup is worth over a grand! finally, a SCORE  ;D Dont want to sell them, but its nice to know I could if I needed to. Thanks!

mart- I think I know what ya mean. Still in the planning stages, and now that I know its really old Im worried about welding it so may have to find an alternative. This actually didnt have an arch on top, it was mounted to an overhead beam on a porch

JoshandLila...Glad to hear the news.  I stopped short...I was meaning it was too hard to tell for me from the pics.  Like so many times here on the forum....having it in hand for inspection makes a world of difference!

I wouldn't worry about welding it as long as you or someone who does it knows what they are doing.  It needs to be functional for you.
