Ferdinand Konščak Map
« on: August 01, 2012, 10:22:52 pm »
This is a piece I picked up a couple of years back. This is a map of California in 1746. This map is made by Ferdinand Konščak. That is all I know about it. I don't know what the map is made of. Also there is nothing on the map/scroll that would indicate who made this. All feedback welcome on this piece!!

Gorgeous map!

"After the 1746 expedition he published a map of Lower California, as far as the mouth of the Colorado in the Golf of California. This map was later included in many books and was used until mid-nineteenth century as the official American map."

Interesting. Is the map leather?

It could also be plaster.

http://www.croatianhistory.net/etf/france.html Scroll down. The story of the map is here. I'm wondering if this could be a reproduction made of local volcanic ash?

The hanger on back says it is a reproduction of the map made in plaster and intended as a wall hanging !!

Back in the 70`s there was a surge in antiques and antique looking items !! I think thats when it was made !!  Furniture and speciality stores carried them !!  You could pick your furniture and all the decor to go along with it !!
