Trying to find out about this table lamp
« on: August 02, 2012, 11:12:37 pm »
Here is what I know, although not much lol, any help as to origin, age, value would be super thanks!
1) it weighs a metric ton lol
2) The crystal is real not plastic
3)im pretty sure it is european
4) im guessing its somewhere in the 1920's to late 1940's by the hardware used in it such as bakelite twists for switches, cord etc.

Are there any numbers/markings on it anywhere?  Look at areas where bulbs screw in....
Can you post a pic of the underside please?

There are no numbers anywhere on it around the bulbs. for a min i thought i was duped because the pieces surrounding the bulb holders was shiny brasslike and i thought oh crap their cheap plastic, however it is not, its real brass plated steel. heres the pic of the bottom.

Are the crystals on the sides also real and do they have a hole at the bottom ?? Looks like they should be the same as the top part !! Odd that the inside should show since it is not visually appealing !!

I have not found a similar lamp but I would guess it was for an entry or foyer !! Or possibly an upscale parlor !! Would help to date by knowing the metal it was made from !! Brass plate was common throughout most of the 20th century !!

Many lamps like this were produced in Italy and elsewhere and imported in the 1960s and 70s. They went perfectly with crushed velvet gold upholstery especially if it was covered with plastic slipcovers. Is the wiring, plug and socket original? That is always a good clue to its age. A picture of those would help.  If there is a UL sticker you can look up the E number on line and get the listing name and date. If you put a magnet to it it probably won't stick because they were made of white metal with a brass plating. The plating will show corrosion from underneath easily because it was thin. The crystals were usually pressed glass as opposed to cut like Swarovsky. Here is one that is not nearly as elaborate as yours which sold for over 70.00 on Ebay.

"crushed velvet gold upholstery especially if it was covered with plastic slipcovers"

LOL! In architecture this period was called "new formalism."

I think 1960s probably nails it.

lol thank you!!, now im thinking I have an entry lamp from A house of ill repute!! sweet!! lol thank you for the info. funny, I got these in a box lot at auction, with a tag on it from a closed antique shop that was priced at $850.00 lol but all it said was " European antique lamp" . but am always skeptical about huge price tags.

As well you should be, especially since prices have fallen so much.
