Need help! Possible eskimo carving from bone??
« on: August 27, 2012, 02:41:16 pm »
Don't know much about it.....bought from an estate sale......Thought it looked unique.......The bottom of the canoe feels porous......it is definitely not wood...lol.....the Eskimo figures are carved from the same material possible....then the paddle looks ivory......any help would be greatly appreciated.

Its a really nice piece, its probably Inuit,...its made of bone as you have said, you can see that on the bottom,at first i though perhaps it was a Walrus tusk,or a whales tooth,....but as they are ivory...then unless its pre 1947 it would be illegal to have it...Inuit sculptures are sought after, especially if it is signed, but i like it,...now for some searching...
I make no excuses,and no apologies....but i like a good Malt,

Having done more searching...Inuit sculptures do not face the same restrictions in the use of ivory...as theirs comes from legally killed animals that produce ivory,i.e. walrus, narwhal,...and this ivory is readily available for sale...
