Someone brought in this porcelain piece
« on: August 30, 2012, 02:33:51 pm »
I am not a porcelain expert so was hoping you guys can help out.

It looks to me as porcelain hand painted with brass metal work.

On the bottom of the metal it reads " L. henry"

There is also a blue symbol on the bottom of lid. I am attaching the pictures with the hopes that you guys can help me appraise this.

She wants 25 dollars for it, is it worth it?

Hi! I am hoping that the resident expert, of Porcelain Marks & More will show up here and help out.

Sevres is one of the most copied/faked set of marks out there.  AND I don't see this in their original marks.

This is a variation of a crossed swords mark.

Here's hoping Chris will pipe in!

I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

look carefully on the porcelain for a signature !! I checked several listings and l.henry did the bronze work for some of Sevres porcelain urns !!  seems they are pretty pricey if if real Sevres but some pieces have been repro`d !!  The artist name would help !!

From what I see it does look like a repro but I do have to say if you have a shop that doesn't just sell antiques it would be a good buy at $25.

Quick shot at this one: might be the pics, but the color of the bronze (and the impression of the Henry signature) is far off in a way that may imply a repro. The metal parts are just too 'clean' (no dirt rubs, scuffing, etc.) for an item of age.

The Henry foundry did a lot of work for various artists, which in a way makes a "good ID" near impossible as all references refer to the decorator of the porcelain and ignore the "hardware" base. Exactly that is the reason for which such items are then targeted by repro artists: no normal person can really come up with background facts.

Finally, I had a thorough look at my material regarding French manufacturers and decorators - none of them showed such a mark. So either my material is insufficient (as French material is not my cup of tea) or the mark is a made-up repro mark.
