Carnival Glass Bowl
« on: September 12, 2012, 06:47:13 pm »
I have this wonderful little bowl (about 6.5” x 2.25”) that belonged to my grandmother.  I THINK it might have even been her mother’s but not sure on that.  I was wondering if anyone had any information about this sweet little bowl.  All I do know (I think) is that it is called carnival glass.

I think this is called "Stippled Rays" Golden. Wendy let me know if I'm right on that. If that's a 10" inch bowl it worth about $39-$42.00. If it's 5 1/2" bowl it's worth about $38.-$40.00.

called carnival glass because it was given away as prizes for winners at carnivals, fairs ect !!  the little bowls were in the middle and you pitched a nickel !! if the nickel landed in a bowl and stayed (didn`t happen often) you won the bowl !!

Thanks, Mart!  I'm 51 and remember carnivals similar to that. . . except all I ever won was a goldfish in a bowl!  It's so neat to know the history of the pieces.  Thanks again.

Goldfish in a bowl.....you were privileged....here in Scotland...it was a clear plastic bag....that had just enough water to cover the poor wee thing....that invariably died before you got him home... :(

Originally, Carnival Glass was a per say “cheap” glass, most of which was produced via the older Pattern Glass molds and was originally referred to as “the poor person’s Tiffany glass”.

Thus it was affordable to the average household and they purchased scads of it. Many of the pieces were cheap enough to be given away as premiums and prizes, thus it became to be commonly known as “carnival glass” …… and eventually that name became its “official” name.

Bigwull here I am !!  ;)  Very sweet little carnival glass bowl!!  Greenacres you were so on the right track with Stippled Rays  :) but that pattern has a tiny stippled effect every other ray  if you enlarge this one you will clearly see what I mean http://www.ebay.com/itm/MARIGOLD-CARNIVAL-GLASS-PLATE-STIPPLED-RAYS-BY-FENTON-6-/160879837558?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item25752f8176

This piece was made by Imperial Glass and is called Pillar flute in Marigold Like this one only in a diffrent shape http://www.ebay.com/itm/Imperial-Glass-PILLAR-FLUTE-Carnival-Celery-Dish-mgold-/130554953570?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e65ae7f62
You need to take everything into account , pattern on the outside only  , iridescent on both outside  & inside, foot, lip slightly turned down , size and shape of star pattern on base and so on. Nice little piece and I would say $55.00
KC would love to find something so nice in my detergent boxes today!! They had the right idea back then! Mart my little one gets only JUNK at carnivals today and it costs a fortune!! :(   And cogar I love the fact that you know of how carnival was the poor person’s Tiffany glass!!

Thanks, Wendy, .... I love Carnival too.

And what did you actually mean by "pattern on the outside only", or was that a typo?

And '"Yes", those CG patterns will oftentimes drive you "bananas" because there are so many of them .... and some, like you mentioned above, that look alike but are not exactly the same.

Wendy, lucky for us, when we first started buying Carnival someone sold us the ten (10) volume set of ring-bound books of  ….“Carnival Glass Patterns”, 2nd Edition, 1968, authored by Marion T. Hartung. I’m guessing you probably have a set of them. Anyway, Book #1 has 100 patterns in it.

I do not have those Cogar but would love to have the 10 volume set!!! Like gold they contain so much info you can not find online and the photos are BEAUTIFUL!! I have the 7th and 8th edition by Bill Edwards & Mike Carwile. I take a diffrent book on glass to bed each night and that's how I go to sleep  :) Just found 2 packed away from my mother on Opalescent glass and one on Fenton 1907-1939 will be reading those every night until done!! (like Christmas) No typo on this piece the "pattern" is on the outside of the bowl and the interior is smooth, both sides were sprayed before firing. Is it you who has that darn beautiful cranberry bowl that has alluded me to this day?? Still hunting for that one!!

OK, Wendy, I now see what you were saying. You were speaking specifically about the pictured bowl and for some reason I thought it was general statement on how to identify CG pieces. My bad.  ::)

And Windy, maybe I'll post a couple pictures of those books instead of trying to describe them to you.
