old religous candle holder? Morter minus the pestle?

Hi, new member...  

I acquired this from a box of "stuff" that belonged to my grandmother, that no one else wanted.

I know it is probably worthless, but I'm more so curious about how old it is, and its origin.

It is clearly religious. It has a maltese cross on the top, and either a Patriarchal Cross or Cross of Lorraine on the bottom(from what i have researched).

Any ideas greatly appreciated!

What a strange object to have in your car...I,ve seen tumbling dice...and furry creatures....but never a lump of sandstone...that looks like it fell off of some building.... ;D ;D

It looks like it could be marble. If it wasn't a cup, I would have thought it was a piece of broken gravestone. Is there evidence of soot inside it like maybe it held a candle? Whatever it is, it's cool!!

Telsofthesevenseas I agree that it most likely is a candle holder.  Haven't seen a religious mortar/pestle... 

I also agree that it looks like possibly alabaster.

I would say its granite and a part broken off a tombstone !!  Many old tombstones look like that !!

Does either end look like it is "broken off"...I know that it looks like pieces have been broken off of it...but if it looks like "it" is the broken off piece?

Just from the pics I see it doesn't appear so.

And yes...it could be a really aged piece!!!!!

If I were to guess I would say its German !! Or at least that area !!  Second pic, top that spot looks like granite !!  Have you washed it ??

Sorry for the misleading pics.  Some pieces of it are worn, or broken off, but it itself is not a broken off piece of something.  If I was a betting man, I would say it is a candle holder.  Does not appear to have any wax residue.... however, it looks old as dirt so that could be expected. 

I have not washed it or done anything to it other than hold it briefly and take those pics. 


Lets just say for shicks and giggles it is a religious candle holder....  how old do you think we are talking?

The cross on it is the Cross of Lorraine, it is an ancient symbol and the cross bars were of equal length...but in the 20th century..the top cross bar was shortened..this may help to date it...

Please forgive me..guys...if i sound like a broken record...but i,ll say it again....I just wish that when people come on here looking for info...they tell us which country they are in and a general location...I can understand that they want to retain their anonymity...but we are not mind readers...this lump of stone/marble/ or whatever it is,...looks very European....by the mere fact that it has a 20th century Cross of Lorraine...and a Maltese Cross...again European....the chances are that it was picked up in Europe....but as it stands it could have come from Timbuktu.....Help us to help you...

I can understand, why some people don,t put their email ads on their profiles...but i just don,t get,why they think we can guess where they come from...and what sex they are...there,s nothing worse that putting your foot in it by calling he a she and vice/versa.....i nearly did it a few times with you guys/gals...God am i starting to sound Americanised,....stop the bus...i have to get off....getting back to that lump...i think its come from some little church somewhere...perhaps  it fell off or was hacked off we probably will never find out......

coptic cross and maltese cross looks like doby stone could be connected to collecting funds for knight templars or hospitallers
