Old Books
« on: September 21, 2012, 05:59:02 pm »

I also received these old books, i love how they documented each. Each of them are right at the turn of the century, or before. I don't theink the value would be much seeing they're condition, but i just love old things!  My camera was dying so i didn't get to take all that i wanted to....

This is written in the top book. Tales From Shakespeare,

Nathanial Hawthorne House of Seven Gables, The forth book down. This was a Library book, from St. Louis MO, It has several stamps in it.... this one being the latest and most ledgable, but he other one looks to read 1885. Its copyright date is  1883.

This was written in pen in the book Ben Hur, Third book down. "Presented to Aurthur B McDorman, By his mother. July 1st, 1893. A Birthday Gift". It has really faded.... It has a date of 1880.

Shakespeare: Life, Art and Character "Florence Davis, November 1906" the bottom book.

http://www.abaa.org/books/112121644.html This could be your "House of Seven Gables"!  ;D Check and see if it says "First Edition".

Those books are very cool, and the inscriptions are the icing on the cake!

My husband's Aunt had a friend Betty Burgess. She lived in Absecon, New Jersey. She died many many years. She would have been over 100yrs. old. I don't know where your from. I wonder if she was related.

My husband and I love it too! We had a joke. Betty Burgess built a house in Absecon , NJ. When they were digging the foundation they found what we thought was a hachet from the Absecon Indians. We used laugh because he would tell me it was our lottery ticket. When I got the ticket that was the first thing we thought of. It turned out it was the biggest pre-historic ax they had ever seen and the nicest. $500. Then I took my Peter pan-a-phone, which is a portable phonagraph, from my grandfather. We were aloud to bring two items, but of course I brought three, ;D I had a watch from my grandmother which turned out to be a very exspensive watch and I didn't really know it. What a great time! At the time it was a lottery system. The next oppurtunity they wanted $150. a ticket!

Not that I doubt you, but it's hard to believe that the biggest prehistoric axe they had ever seen was only worth $500. Some of those Native American artifacts go for thousands!
