My $2.00 find ....
« on: October 02, 2012, 12:17:54 pm »
I want your opinion on this small plate. There is slight damage. It doesn't say Bavarian. It says Germany. For $2.00 I couldn't go wrong.

It is hand painted not a decal. I was going to buy a Guilloche locket brooch, but it had some rough spots. They wanted $14.50 and I wasn't sure. I may run back. That and a peacock ring enamel for $4.00. It was a stretch band. Does that put it in the 60's? There was a lot there today.

I keep reading about Bavarian china in threads.  What is so special about Bavarian china?  Is it all Bavarian china, or just some pieces?

Tales it does match my kitchen I have it in my office. I was making plans lol. The kitchen sounds like a good place. My father's mother had plates hanging in her kitchen and it's a nice memory.

I know this may sound terrible, but I also do mosaics. I'm not using this one, but I used to by dishes to smash them. Of course checking first, lol.

Greenacres - sounds fun.  I do stained glass, and once the dust settles and my husband and I relocated, I want to take some of my pretty depression glass plates and mount them within a transom window above a kitchen window.  I already have the plan in my head to make sure that the plates are protected and could be removed at any time in the future.  I think it will be fun - instead of rondelles, I'll have little plates!

That sounds beautiful. You'll have to post it! Someone told me to take me colored bottles and hang them to catch the light. How do you plan to keep your plates from rolling?

I will use the same technique that is used to mount a piece of circular glass (like a rondelle) into a window.  We use an "H" shaped piece of lead came and wrap it around the glass.  The other pieces fit around the plate into the design.  I plan on using different types of architectural clear glass so that the accent will be on the depression glass.  Once the window is complete, I will place a sheet of plate glass on each side of it to protect the plates for any type of damage (flying rocks from lawn-mowers etc).  That will also help provide support for the window.

I can't wait!  I love making the stuff, but as a result of going through my parent's stuff and time it has taken, I haven't had the pleasure.  I have an "antique" lamp that I have to repair for a lady, but it will be a short, simple fix!  Just cut and grind. . . no leading or soldering :-(
