Its the woodfiller...1st one on the list....yes can use their stain....but i would also suggest you buy a bottle of the ..Topps....its one of these products that No dealer in dark furniture..should be without...

these are nice looking chairs...but i feel that there are two missing for them to be a full set of dining chairs....these  would have come with two carvers...if i,m not mistaken....it seems to be a trend nowadays, that when chairs become separated from the table.the first two chairs to be go walkies is the carvers...as these are so versatile...and can be used without a table...as for these six....i can see them in a large hall, as hall tables, and they can be sold in pairs..or quadruples...or altogether....if and when you come to sell them..make sure you plant the seed of hall chairs, into the minds of prospective buyers...

I take it that by "carvers" you're referring to what we in the us call armchairs? Otherwise your comments are spot on.

Yes...in the UK its a carver, that sits at the end of the table...but basically its a wooden armchair...see pic,....

Here in the south the armchairs are called captains chairs !! Just a geographical difference and what the locals call them !!
The set is as ghopper said in the Eastlake style !!

They were bought in France and were described as Henri II.  I have researched this and they do appear to be in the Henri II style.

Wullie I am sure we could go on for days at this !!  LOL  I am told that when there was more river traffic and the ships came into port the chair at the head of the table was always given to the Captain wherever he had dinner !! Since those were usually armchairs they started calling them "the Captains Chair" !! Or at least thats the souths version !!

I will agree with that !!

Can you take some closer pics of one of the chairs ?? Underside and back too so maybe we can tell the age !!
Can I ask how much you gave for these chairs in US dollars ?? And who did you buy them from ??  Shop, individual or,, ???
