Rare Victorian Chair, Jelliff?
« on: October 14, 2012, 08:17:49 am »

Have a chair from my mother's family.  It is heavily carved with a woman's head on the crest and arms.  Finish is original and in excellent condition.  Fabric is needle point, very old but not original. It is in relatively good condition considering its age.  Would appreciate help in identifying Jelliff or not.  What might be the worth of the chair and how would I go about selling it if I choose to do so?  I am a newbie and appreciate any help you can provide.  (Will attach pics).  Thanks.

Can you take a pic of the underside of the chair so we can see construction ??

It very well could be Jelliff, although not every chair with faces on the arms is by him. I think it's safe to say "attributed to Jelliff." Of course, if you find a signature or tag underneath the upholstry then you can confidently say "Jelliff!"

It's a beautiful chair in any case. I'd say it might go for $700, maybe even up to $1K in the northeast.

Really need to see close up pics of underside construction as stated earlier.  Any markings? (If there are...not a original)

Glad to see that you have been searching this out to find out about it.  It  will need to be taken for a hands-on evaluation to verify an authentic one.  Seems you have gotten the same great advice from other forums!

It is isn't it greenacres?

Also, what are the dimensions of the piece?  They were typically two...the larger one was a gentleman's chair and the smaller one for the lady.

Sometimes when you do it in the right setting the furniture isn't so dark. I like bright rooms. If you use bright walls and hardwoods it becomes more of a showpiece.

I think i feel this way, because i can remember when i was young...maybe 5 or 6 ..my mum used to visit her Aunt Annie...and she had Dark Victorian Furniture...which i later found out was called Mourning Furniture...anyway. .back to this story...we would visit my mums aunt....but us children were never allowed into the room where her Victorian  Parlour set was ...nor ever allowed to sit on it,..not even at Christmas time....That set and everything else that she had...is now in Sapphire land....NS,

And you're going to tell me 'where' in sapphire land so I can go visit it (and sit on it!!   :D) Personally I LOVE the old, dark stuff.....but it always got used within our family/relatives homes.

Greenacres is quite the trouble maker!  :D

Yes, I responded in at least one other forum to this chair. I get the impression the owner is gathering opinions in preparation for sale. I'm afraid my opinion hasn't changed much, but at least it's positive! What a beautiful chair!

I wouldn't let BigWull sit on my parlor set, either! ;) ;D
