I'm curious , buddyjeff , (as to it's size) ... does it seem it has a 'footprint' the size of a horseshoe , or perhaps a sadiron ?

Looks like s/o has recently ground/filed off some metal   ... it seems to be a paired/repaired item , most surely a tool ! ... also , are there any 'measuring-type' marks i/s the cool little (iron?) object ....

http://www.auctionwally.com/appraisals/whats-it-worth-appraisal-of-antique-carpenters-chest.html

The appraisal of this chest was $225.00, they give a quick price and a wholesale price. It's not the same look, but it will give you an idea.
