1950s era bureau dresser
« on: October 21, 2012, 12:04:10 pm »
I recently purchased a 1950s? era chest dresser that I would love to know more about.  There are no identifying hallmarks or manufacturer's labels.  it is very heavy and dimensions are 48" high by 46" across.  Scribble scrollwork metal pulls on top cabinets which when open reveal three narrow sliding drawers that have a glass pull panel in the center that seems to be all original.  The entire center of the piece angles inward (see photo).  Three lower deeper drawers.  Very minimal wear and a couple of "dings" but overall condition is pristine.  Any help on identifying the age or identity of the piece would be greatly appreciated.

Well, You got the time right !!  Made in the 50`s,, can`t get any closer than that !! Similar types were made by many makers !! Its called a step back bureau or a gentlemans bureau !! Top is recessed back so thats why it is called a step-back !! Its blond mahogany and is very heavy and well made !!  I lived with similar furniture when I was a kid !!

Blonde furniture from the 50's!!!!!  The 1950s were all about blonde, or blond, woods!

Search "blonde furniture" and you will see more than you want to!  :)

My folks had blonde a blonde bedroom set as well Mart!

I can't stand the stuff myself, but won't argue that it appears to actually be well made, I'd guess by Heywood Wakefield or the like. ;)
