1940's ? Tresa Alligator Suitcase watch
« on: October 25, 2012, 11:59:50 am »
My mom has this watch from my grandmother. My grandmother recieved it as a gift for an old time gangster that died in prison. He had the sweets for her. My grandparents were interesting people. My grandfather and grandmother were business people. He wore a suit or sport coat till the day he died. He was a tough man. Anyway, back to the watch. Can't find it on the internet. I saw it in one of my books and have taken quick glances. Has anyone heard or seen one?

I have seen one like this. It belonged to my grandparents also.  This was a traveling portable alarm clock wound by hand. I'm guessing from the 1940s or 50s.

That's it! Philadelphia ;D What part of Philadelphia?  Maybe I'm not searching it right. The only one I found on ebay was new. I'm going back to the books, lol. Just for now!

I found it in "Judith Miller's 2008" price guide. Maybe worth $175.00.

"As the Stomach Turns!" ;D Ghopper, Germantown is where my grandfather had his manufacturing company. When I was little we would go to work with him. My sister and I would give each other rides on the hand trucks.

Not much light to shed, since this clock was purchased well before I was born!  Yes, my grandfather grew up in Germantown/Philly (don't know what part, some areas have declined!). I know he worked for Remington and DuPont in Connecticut and Delaware in the mid-century years, so this clock may have been purchased by his parents in Philadelphia, or at some regional east coast store.

My guess is that he and his family probably shopped in the same store(s) as your predecessors, Greenacres, and had the same kind of taste. Those traveling clocks were quite the thing back in the day!  I loved playing with it when I was a kid.
