This green bowl is driving me nuts!
« on: November 13, 2012, 12:54:45 am »
First off, long time, no see! I hope everyone's well :)

Any glass lovers out there? I have this ribbed, green bowl with tab handles that I'm hoping to learn about. I can't seem to find one like it anywhere. I'm assuming it's vintage but not sure how old it is, or who made it.

It's small, 6 inches from handle to handle, and just under 2 inches deep.

The color reminds me of jadeite, but it looks like it's fired onto clear glass on the underside (if that makes sense?).   Meaning I can see the ribbing design through the inside of the bowl. I'll post a picture of it in the light too so you can see what I mean.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated, as always. And it's great to be back...I have a lot of posts to catch up on, haha.

It appears what you have is a jadeite bowl, Anchor Hocking made most of the jadite bowls under the Fire king brand, your I have not see this pattern before it almost looks like a Heisey pattern but not sure if they made any jadeite bowl.  I will snoop around a bit more for you.  But maybe this will give you a start point.

It is a handled soup or cream soup bowl.

You are correct this piece is what I would call fired on glass - the glass bowl is made in clear glass then the color is applied to the outside & fired. Will pull some books later today and see what I can find.  Really pretty little bowl!!

Thanks all.
So if it's fired-on, it's different from jadeite, right?

I thought it looked similar to Heisey also, but the bottoms were different.

Totally agree wendy...it is fired on.  I thought it was just the pic that was showing up on my computer and I was missing something so I didn't put that previously.

KC I really almost missed it myself   :) but one photo has a small defect in the outside color.    Yes aDawn Jadeite is diffrent it is a creamy jade colored glass  , where your glass is clear with the color painted (or sprayed) on the outside only.

That is a depression pattern that came in pink and clear and maybe other colors. I never saw one fired in that color. If you go into Google images and put in "ribbed depression glass patterns" a couple of pink ones will come up. Unfortunately no one selling them knows the pattern name or maker nor do I. I will keep looking. From the color I would guess yours was made in the 50s or 60s. Think of the colors that were popular on cars from 55 to 62. The triple loop handles gave it away to me. I have had a couple pink ones in two sizes. My wife collects pink glass and one or two have passed through here.

HA, that's 1 of the reasons I didn't think it was Jadite. Have never seen a handle like that on a piece of Jadite.

As a "rule-of-thumb", most all Jadite is "utility" glassware, ..... not "decorative".

I really "goofed" one time at a garage sale in Florida where a young gal was selling her mother's goodies at "get-rid-of-prices". She had like 3 boxes full of restaurant "grade" Jadite. Cups, mugs, saucers, plates (divided & plain), etc., ... musta been over 100 pieces.

And "dummy" me, I only picked out about a dozen pieces @ 10 cents each to carry back north with me. And "dummy dummy" me .... didn't take a one of those "coffee" mugs. Bout 3+ months later was when the prices for Jadite kinda quadtrupled.  :'( :'(

OH NO cogar!!!!   So far This is what I have found the first  piece is in crystal which is how your piece would look before the fired on color applied to the outside  - http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-VINTAGE-RIBBED-BERRY-BOWLS-WITH-SMALL-HANDLES-ELEGANT-/110944390161?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19d4cd0c11

This next piece is your set only in pink  the seller states it is what is called Platonite glass, They are wrong Platonite glass is a treated glass on the outside like yours but the inner glass is white not clear. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Lot-3-PINK-Platonite-4-3-4-Ribbed-Dessert-Bowls-with-Handles-/200726990276?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ebc42cdc4

But still no maker  :P  will dig more later

Good one Wendy!

Cogar, it was Martha Stewart that drove Jadite prices through the roof. Do not blame yourself, blame Martha.

I also stand corrected....I do believe it is a berry/dessert bowl versus a soup bowl....totally forgot about them!!!

I did not know that, Frogpatch.

I did know that the TV sitcom "Friends" caused the price of "flatwall cupboards" to increase. I think it was that show that had one on the "set" that was painted bright red.
