Leather wallet - I think! Can anyone tell me more about it?

Hi all

My first post!  I have this item and wondered if anyone knows anything about it....  I have had it 15-20 years and really cannot remember where I got it from.  I'm not even entirely sure what it is.  I'm pretty sure it is leather but I'm not certain on that either.  

My guess is that it is some kind of wallet/purse.  

I wondered if anyone has ever seen anything like it, whether anyone can tell me anthing about it, and whether it has any worth.  

Apologies in advance if it is not an antique and/or worthless.   = if this is one of those special antique roadshow moments!  

I've tried looking for something on similar on the internet but had no luck.  That could be because I know so little about it and therefore might not have been using the best seaarch terms....

this is a leather Tobacco Pouch..for holding a 25g/50g pouch of hand rolling tobacco...the papers are held in the centre...see link

Ah - didn't think of that! 

Sounds like a good idea, although I don;t think at this stage I could be 100% sure you are right.  Not too sure what part you are referring to RE papers.  There are actually 3-4 large sections.  I'll have to take some pics showing the opening when I get home. 

The measurements are as follows:

Open length: 33.5cm/34.5cm
Open width: 22.5cm
Closed length: 22.5cm (i.e. same as open width!)
Closed width: 12.5cm

So would you say you feel confident that this is what it is?

with not having these measurements,at the start,i was positive,..but now I will have to say...No...not with these measurements...a 50g tobacco pouch measures approx 15cm long x 12.5cm when closed...back to the drawing board....

Looks like a pretty typical ladies clutch to me !! Leather was pretty popular 40`s and 50`s for these and purses !!

Condition is not the best,, so as a 40`s era ladies clutch,,, maybe $10.00 !!  The condition is key on items like this !!  Has to be really good !!  Welcome to the forum,, forgot to tell you earlier !!  Sorry !!

The turquoise makes me think 40s-50s as well, probably 50s. I can't imagine that it would even be worth $20, but I'm not super well informed about purse values.

Someone thinks that it might date back to the 18th century and that it most likely would have been used used for holding important papers and money by a wealthy gentleman.

Any thoughts on that?

No...don't believe so!  I agree with the rest of the forum on approximate date range.

Measure it with a check !!  If it fits inside with small space around the edge,, Then it is more likely what we told you,,ladies clutch from 40`s 50`s !! It would have held a checkbook and a register !!  Some had space for money and some didn`t,,may have had a change compartment for emergency phone calls !!  They were $.5 and $.10 at the phone booth !!

I don't know...at almost 9" in width, it looks bigger than what would be required for modern currency?

Opened up that is about right !! Look to see if its modern machine stitching !!
