Shawnee King Corn Cookie Jar
« on: November 20, 2012, 01:43:20 pm »
A dealer/collector saw this vintage cookie jar in my house and wanted to buy it. I told him I wanted $100. However, he said he won't pay more than $20 for it, but he keeps bugging me to the point of harassment. I did look on Ebay and they are selling anywhere from $40 to $100. Even just the lid is worth $15. It makes me wonder why he's so gung-ho on this particular one when I have several McCoy cookie jars in which he's not the least bit interested. What WOULD be a reasonable price to demand for it?

ReplacementLtd. has them listed to wit:

Cookie Jar And Lid  # 66 $239.95

http://www.replacements.com/webquote/SHWCOK.htm

If in mint condition, it ought to be worth $150

With a Google Image search I found one that sold for that price.

Full value for your piece is at least $275.00  and at some point the market will return!! I'm with cogar & mart NO less than $150.00 in this market!! This dealer keeps bugging you to the point of harassment because he knows at $20.00 he can still make a good profit!! Tell him $150.00 or lose your number!!!  ;)

I'm far from any expert, and certaintly not one on Shawnee. But, after looking at most of the Corn King cookie jars on eBay...are they supposed to be original pre-1961 jars? I don't think so.

At the risk of offending people, a lot of antique dealers are (I will be polite) cheap. Their motto is boy low sell high which means pay a lot less than something is worth to make yourself a huge profit. Then brag to your friends. If you ever offered someone more than they were asking when you knew their price was too low, you are not a member of the rip off club and need to be commended. We all have stumbled across the two dollar bargain at a thrift store. That's not what I am talking about. I am talking about knowing the value and not being satisfied with a 40 or 50 percent profit. If you know you have to put a lot of work into something or hold it for a long time that has some justification. However, if you can flip something for a fifty percent profit and that is not enough, you are greedy. I was a dealer for 30 years and have seen them all. I wish I had a dollar for every con I have seen. I never let other dealers know I was a dealer and what they would try was down right awful. Sorry but you hit a nerve with me.

I have several original pieces of Corn King !!  There have been similarities made but are pretty easy to tell the difference if in hand !!
I agree Frogpatch !! I bought more at garage sales and wholesalers than from other dealers !!  Most do not tell the truth either !!

After looking at what's being offered on eBay right now, I don't believe any of them are original Corn King jars. In fact one seller states: "This is a licensed Shawnee item. It is not old..."
My point being; You can't base pricing on what is being offered for sale on the internet. I'd rather pay top price for an old piece than buy a new repop, regardless if it's "licensed".

The last time he called I told him when he wanted to pay the $100 to contact me then and to stop calling with his lowball offer. So far I haven't heard back. Let him think about it over the winter.

It is a very nice piece and will increase in value. No harm hanging on to it. Just display it and admire it. It probably belongs right where it is.

When they keep calling you know you have something!!!

If you can, hold on to it.  It will only increase in value.

Agree about some dealers with the comments above.  However, there are some honest folks out there....hopefully most are on this forum!

The remakes from the old molds are supposed to have a notation/designating mark difference - but most don't.  Hands on is needed most of the time to tell the difference in materials/glazes/etc.

Nice to see you have a winner there!

It's been over 2 years since I posted about this item. I only heard once again  (about 2 months ago, just before Christmas) from the man that wanted to buy it with the same offer. He's not budging and he says this type of item doesn't increase in value; in fact it's decreasing so I'd better sell to him before the value falls to zilch. It is marked Shawnee on the bottom, so I believe it's an authentic piece. I know my mom was collecting in the 1970s before the big repro boom hit the antique market.

This is a completed sale from ebay Feb 4 2015 for a variety of Shawnee including a cookie jar.  I have no idea if it is pre 1960 or not but only sold for $79.
