Art Nouveau Buckle Help
« on: December 06, 2012, 06:45:37 am »
Hello,
I'm new to the forum, I clean out estates and found this buckle, I have done a little research and found out it was made by (Turriet & Bardach of Austria 1852-1911) I cannot find another like it any where online and am trying to find a value, I collect militaria and want to use it to trade.
                   Thanks,
                   Kevin

Judging by the hue..of the metal..it looks like silverplate.over a copper base...a pic of the rear of the buckle...may tell us more...I,ve done some searching but..like you, have,nt found this buckle...but there are a few others from this maker...and from what i,ve seen the average selling price is in the region of $100/150....
I make no excuses,and no apologies....but i like a good Malt,

Hi Bigwull,

Here are some back and TM photos, yes I've seen some for that value, but I've also found some from this Co. valued in the 300-400 range, that's what messes me up.
                                  Thanks,
                                   Kevin

Well its definitely silver plate over copper...as to value...if you pitch it somewhere in the middle to high of those prices...then i don,t think you will be far off the mark....and if it is maybe worth more..then prospective buyers will bid accordingly...if this were put to auction....with a suitable reserve in place...
I make no excuses,and no apologies....but i like a good Malt,

Hi Bigwull,
Thanks for the help, wish I could find another like it, just to check it out, I'm pretty sure it was made closer to the end of the Co. career 1911

                                       Thanks again,
                                         Kevin

Where are you located ??  What makes you think its Turiet & Barbach !!  All I have found on them lists their marks as T&B rather than T.B. as a single persons initials !!
I think your buckle could possibly be one of Thomas Bradbury`s early marks !!  They used the shield and crown with the T.B. mark,  later added the & S for "and Sons" !! They did a lot of Sheffield plate !! Silver over copper base !!

Hi Mart,

Thomas Bradbury & Sons Used TB&S (in shield with crown), prior to that did use TB, but the shape of the cartouche WAS NOT like the one seen.  TB was used with a mid point period between TB (not a period at after the T and at the line level) and even used TB.

The TB that I am familiar with (TB in a cartouche) which is what is on this one is noted as being the mark for Turriet & Bardach (or if you prefer, Turriet Und Bardach).  :)

Beautiful buckle by the way.

Hi KC,

Thanks for the verification on the T.B. that's what I've found up to now.

May be right !!  But all I found including one German site listed their marks as T&B !! And this buckle seemed a bit simple for their work,, greek key border, to me, would put this more around 1920 or after !!  But I am not a jewelry person you know !!

1920 would be way after art nouveau, more like deco by that time.

Hi Mart,

if you look at the three sites I supplied, you'll see they also put the Mark at Turriet & Bardach, also I found another buckle  they did in silver plate that was not so fancy and just straight lines, so I guess they did all different forms, also if it is Turriet & Bardach, it could not be later than 1911, I was told that's when the Company dissolved.

                                           Thanks,

Right Ghopper, thats when the greek key design was mostly used,, during the deco period ! Nouveaux period was more feminine and flowing lines, florals ect !!  Not to say this is not Nouveaux period as different countries had an earlier or later transition !!  Guess I just see things different !!

you would do with them $1 cheaters....dig some bucks from out under your mattress..or from a crock that you might have buried in your backyard...and buy yourself a decent pair of specs...then you might see things differently....and. ..Oh..no X in Nouveau.... ;D
