Hi again.............I have had this happen before myself and have no good answers. I wish I was more proficient with my own camera. Emailing is not incouraged because of virus's etc.  I can't tell how long the object is perhaps 12"-14"? It appears to be silver and don't take this the wrong way but it resembles an opium pipe or part of. Opium dens were commonplace in the 1800's. Then again I may not even be close.

Hi....I replied as you were sending the new photo.............I'm at a lost. Not sure what it is. Look for any markings through a loupe. They might be hard to find. This might give some clues.............. .

Yes the object appears to be solid silver.  It came with my grandmothers 17th century spoon set.  I mean it was in the same box.  It is 8 inches long and has the look of being hand hammered, not machined.  I'm still looking for a makers mark.  I got a hold of a jewellers eye glass today.

Interesting advice whoever you may be.  I have been a member of various forums for years and have NEVER had that comment made as we all do it on other sites.

I'm here for answers....... not criticisms.

sorry - not ever meant as criticism - just safety for fellow antiques lovers -

I had wondered about the silver thingie - on the pic, left end, it looks like it flares out a bit - could it be a tool to turn off a gas lamp?  Really stretching here.  They usually have a curved end. Then the other end, holes, could it have held incense?   Thinking of  possible religious object.  Very interesting piece.                 KB

:huh: Hey I wonder if it is a religious piece.   hmmm. cept there doesn't appear to be any religious symbols on it.  The holes on the bulb part of it go right through it as if it needed ventilation for something, that's why I thought it was a smoking pipe.  I can't find anything on it ANYWHERE.  Good luck!

Hi again Debra............I don't find a record of the print "Payday" but other works by him range in the $100-$600 range. I believe D&B suggested earlier a range of $250-$350. I agree.............

Thank you so much for the information.  Could that silver thing have been used for absynthe at one time?  I know it was a popular hallucogenic in the 1800's .  ? maybe???
