Seeking input on corner chair

Hi all,
Can anyone supply any information on this corner chair? Age, maker, background and value would be great. It was my great-grandmothers and I believe that the seat was recovered sometime around the 1920s?

Looks to be Sheraton legs/feet and if american, first half 19th century

Disagree on that. Turnings look to be ca. 1880.

I would like to see the underside of the seat if there is no dust cover,, and the back !! Also is the pic on the crest a stencil ??  Or can you tell ??

Could very well be victorian era, it has elements of 18th century style as well with it's compass shaped seat. Corner or round about chairs were popular in 18th century america starting with queen anne about 1740 or so and continuing through the chippendale period. Some really fine chippendale examples were made in the Philadelphia area in the last quarter of the 18th century.

The turnings are referred to as "cookie" and were developed during the sheraton era, particularly out in the country where turning cookies was alot less work than reeded or fluted legs seen on finer sheraton examples being made in the cities. Check out this period example, although refinished, it was almost given away at auction last year for $475.

I've seen corner chairs dating up to the mid 20th century, so it was a long-lived type.

Sure, although i dont know why you would unless you are going to have it re-covered.

As you can see from the link above, even period american sheraton is selling for little more than the cost of the timber so your chair would bring little at auction, perhaps $100-200. I would think it being your grandmothers, it's worth far more to you personally than what it would bring in a buyers market.
