Jennings Brothers Clock - Patented 1869 - Any help is great!
« on: December 23, 2012, 12:59:43 pm »
I recently acquired this as a gift from a dear friend. Try as I may (and boy have I tried) to find one like it, I'm coming up short. I've been able to find info on the manufacturer but not this particular clock. Anyone out there that can help me I'd really appreciate it.
Small only about 5"-6" tall
Solid, heavy, Brass or Gold?
Cherub atop it and ornate carvings detail the exterior
The face is of white and shows hours And seconds
Scribed on clock face is JoB with a "c" surrounding
The back lists- Patented May 6, 1890 Dec 23, 1890 and Jan 13, 1891along with The Jennings Bros Manufacturing Company
The bottom lists - J.B. 701 Patn'd June 13, 1899

I'm not sure how to fi d anything specific to worth, information on 3-4 different dates, or details on The Jennings Bros catalogue details. Anyone that can help out there?
Thanks! MelD

Hard to give you much information with the photo that you supplied.  The last date is the starting point, so it would date from around the turn of the 20th century.  Clocks aren't worth much when they have no hands, so you would want to have those replaced, but replacement hands can lower the value.
Please supply some more photos so we can help you with some more information.  GG

Thanks for the prompt reply and yes the clock is in rough shape. I do still love it though. My files were too large but I've got a link below. Can you see them via that? Thanks again! MelD

I found some info..and this clock...ok,its not yours...but..I think yours is one of these...They were called Novelty Clocks..because of the size...and decoration...They have a  gold wash finish.over  spelter...as Jennings Bros...used this metal extensively....and looking at that crack on the foot...i see white metal showing...this particular clock sold for a smidgin over $2 ..in 1906..there is another on this link..just scroll down until...you reach...149-T- 0105...and 165-T-1205...

Wow, a great read for sure and I've come across that site before and again it proves helpful. Wonder what $2 in 1906 would get you in 2012  :o.

Would you guys think it a value add then based on these notes to get the hands repaired or keep it as is? MelD

In the condition it is, it would have very little value where I am (west coast of Canada)  As a dealer I wouldn't buy it as it isn't decorative enough for the amount of repair, Jennings Bros clocks sell quite well, in good condition when they are figural Art Nouveau, while yours is kind of victorian.  But these things are very regional & I see things selling in other places for much higher prices, hopefully others will chime in with their thoughts on value.
Spelter is very difficult to repair, it has a tendency to go "poof" when you put any amount of heat to it.  If you decide to go the repair route, make sure the person has a lot of experience with spelter.  Good luck, sorry I can't be more help, GG

Totally lost here on all except,,,Merry Christmas !!
But to the clock,, Although it will not make a great deal of difference in value,, it should not cost much to get the hands replaced and a cleaning !! Which I would do !! Only good for parts as is !!  Case is negligible !!
