Russian Sterling?
« on: December 26, 2012, 10:18:10 pm »
I have heard that 84 on a silver item means its Russian sterling silver ...84 grams. This is a shot "glass" that appears to be Crudely carved on...not actual stamp. But the detail of the design on the shot glass itself appears to be similar to those of Russian sterling silver shots.  Any detail would be wonderful. Thanks.

Why do you think its silver when its brass color ??  Or is that just the pic that looks like it ??  The above should answer your questions about Russian silver !!

It was just the lighting plus the photo was before i cleaned it.   I used a white cloth and the cloth was black when i had finished. So i heard that is an indication of sterling. Plus the design is similar to those i have seen on other sterling silver shots. But now i have no idea what to think about the "84" based upon the link you sent me.

Actually the black cloth could just as easily be from tarnished brass.

Google "Russian 84 engraved Vodka Cup".  You will get more pics than you want!

Well it's not a piece of junk or i wouldn't have bought it. Regardles of history or material i still love it. Just want to know more about it.

I just googled "Russian 84 engraved Vodka Cup"  tons of similar looking ones but the bottoms are all stamped as where mine is engraved 84.

I am sorry but if its just an 84 on the bottom without the other marks mentioned in the link I gave, then someone has scratched it in to fool the unsuspecting buyer !! And I do think from that color that its brass !!

Well , as i said either way i love this item.  I bought it not thinking it might be sterling but just thinking metal. Wasn't until i saw the 84 that i got curious. I paid next to nothing so not worried about what it is, was more of a curious thing.
