Yeah, definitely a debate on this piece!  I hope it didn't cause any rifts...not my intention at all.  I REALLY appreciate the help from all of you and even more enthralled with the chest than ever!  Thanks so much!

No worries Glasschick. I was being more than a bit facetious.

Lots of knowledge on this board, and sometimes we disagree. As long as there is sound knowledge backing up an opinion then it's all good.

That's the greatness of this forum.  We all work and defend out opinions/knowledge...and many times get it right...and many times lean something new...and a few times agree to disagree!  LOL

Love these threads that take time to decipher!

Thanks for sharing your treasures!

I am still waiting to hear about those screws !! They look almost like galvanized or treated to prevent rust !!

So sorry mart, thought I had answered you  ;)  The screws are almost all the same...a few odd newer ones.  Most have rust on them (small amount....guess they are not brass?) and a ring of rust around them in the wood.

They are definitely not galvanized like my roof nails.....does that help?

if you,ve had your roof done recently...you,d have been better using copper nails...as galvanised ones ..will eventually corrode....an added benefit from using copper nails is....no moss or algae...will grow on a copper nailed roof....... :)

Ha, Wullie, so true.  Looks like we have similar climates...lots of rain and cloudy all the time.  We still use galvanized nails...that is what they sell here for roofing.  I agree copper would be much better.  Roofs don't last long in the soaking wet Pacific Northwest!

Ah, as I type it is a deluge here, 1" in the last hour.  I threaten to start my ark every winter.  We have had record rain here...normally we have about 70" yearly, I am 1/8 mile from beach.  March was a record for us with over 12" of rain, then at the end of March we got 7" of snow that literally pushed over 20' high rhodies and 60' pines!  Not sure the yearly total but it is the 4rth wettest year in the last 80 years.

Since I am also in a Tsunami Zone I was thinking of just attaching a long board on the roof and if it does come I can just surf away, kowabunga!  ;)
