2 drawer box
« on: January 19, 2013, 03:33:02 am »
Just wanted to share this with you all.

I was given this from my grandma after grandpa pass a few years back.  At first I looked all over online, but couldn't find anything like it...  Obviously it was made in post WWII Japan, and a pretty cool little box I plan to just keep in the family for a while.  Not all that interested in the value, but wanted to share it with everybody, and see if anyone has seen one like it before, and knows anything about it?  The bottom drawer has a little pin that plays a "tune" when you pull it out.

Just google "occupied japan wood jewelry box" and you can find many of these !!  Yours has a neat deco look and probably was made in the early part of the occupation !!   But no real way to date these since it didn`t last that long !!

Interesting...I don't believe I've seen one with a "string section" underneath the drawer.
I usually dated those wares in the 1947 to 1953 era. Regardless, a relative short time period in history.

They were also made in this same manner and were also sold/used for cigarettes.

Rauville, I agree, that network has me puzzled.

BusDriverBen, is it string, fishing line or wire?

The term Occupied Japan was used from 1945 (after World War II) through April 25, 1952 - and was required to be stamped on item 1947 to 1952.

The best article outlining this for you is one written/noted on Ebay:
http://reviews.ebay.com/Why-is-it-marked-Occupied-Japan?ugid=10000000002442354

I am learning towards this being a man's valet/jewelry.  It just has that look/style.

If you are a smoker, see if a cigarette would fit on/between the wiring.  I know it sounds crazy...but heard that a "poor man's" version could use copper wiring in a box.  Don't know what that accomplished...but this would be the first one I actually saw!

If you are thinking that there is a musical "wind up" component..in the bottom...well there is,nt..from what i read..the little pin that,s taped to the door..isused to pluck the strings...."think minature zither"

Wullie, I have heard of "closet musicians" but not "under the drawer" musicians!  :)

Bigwull is right.  No wind up anything on this....  The wires are glued on the inside bottom, and the tapped "plucker" is on the bottom/rear of the bottom drawer.  So as you pull the drawer out, it hits the wires.
