Knotty Pine Desk

Was in aunt's home, so probably from the 1960s. It's 4'6" long, 24" deep and 37.5" tall at left side. I decided to ask $50 for it, but wanted another opinion if this was too much or should I ask more?

Nice desk !!  Not an expensive one but since it has holes in back for electronics and could be used for even desktop computers,, I would ask $75. !!  Then you have some leeway to come down if needed !! Everyone likes to haggle a bit and try to get it for less !!

I agree with Mart...nice desk.  People really like this style and coloring.  In my neck of the woods (which isn't far from Mart) $75 - $95 if in GOOD shape.  $100 if in excellent!

I would ask the same as you KC !!  But not sure about her area !! Thats the country look I like !!  For me, wouldn`t hurt if it was a little more distressed !!

I gotta tell ya a cute “distressing” story.

A dealer friend of long ago had purchased a meat “chopping” block and because it looked “too new” to bring big bucks he decided it needed “distressing”. So, the 1st thing he did was turn it upside down, …. tied a rope to it, ….. and to his car, …. and drug it up n’ down the concrete roadway ….. until it looked like it had been “well used”.

Next he started trying different “stains” on the top surface to get the “patina” just right, but nothing he tried suited him and he was getting frustrated, and said “Spit on it, I quit”. Well now, his buddy who was helping him, who had a “chaw” of tobacco in his mouth, just up and “spit” a big mouthful of “backer juice” on the top.

My friend said “DON’T DO THAT” as he was wiping the “spit” off, ….. and he paused, …. and he looked ……. and he said …. “Do it again, do it again”.

And that’s how that  “chopping” block got its instant “patina” applied.

On a meat chopping block, no less. Gross!

Before I retired, I worked with a man that said he never buys things at a garage sale because you never know what was done with or to it beforehand.

Actually, the pouch of chewing tobacco was dumped into a can of water and with some grinding n' stirring and maybe a little boiling ..... the "stain" was made and then applied to the wood.

The way I left the impression it was done ...... would have taken a week to "stain it".

There is lot of "surface" wood to be stained on those old chopping blocks.

That would have sure done the job !!  My Grandad chewed Beech Nut or dipped Garret Sweet snuff !!  My cousin and I sneaked some of the Beech Nut once !!  Was not a happy camper for a while !!

I guess chawin' tobacco is an acquired taste.
