Hi,

I was hoping someone could help me identify the date and value for this chinese bowl . I believe it has been in our family since the 1960s maybe even earlier but I couldn't find any info relevant to the mark. hoping if someone could guide me to the right direction.

Thanks

Hesham

Bowls like this are often Guangxu period ( 1871 - 1908 ) and are decorated with bats. Instead of bats, this has some sort of smoke motif.

It's a decent bowl but probably early 20th. The four character mark is not something i'm familiar with. Top left mark is on most bowls but the other three are not regularly seen on period pieces, so probably Chinese characters referring to something.
Often four character marks are indicating a reproduction of an earlier piece which would have a six character mark.

However, because this is a bit unusual i've e-mailed someone i know just to confirm.

For example

This is a mid 20th century " reproduction " or vase painted and styled in the manner of a period 200 years earlier.

This one is certainly unique !!  Not what we normally see here !! But it does not  show a lot of age on the bottom !!   Do you know how your family acquired it ?? Bought, inherited, gifted ??

Ipcress: thank you for your reply, I did try to look as well before posting and it is like you mentioned, all I found were the bats , 4 character marks but nothing  similar to that. looking forward to hearing what you find out about the marks.

I guess it is most probably the early 20th but I would like to make sure.

Forgot to mention, if it is of any help that it is 31 cm wide.

mart: my wife's father has been an ambassador in Europe and Asia and her grand mother was a known pioneering feminist leader and nationalist in the period 1879 -1947 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huda_Shaarawi) and used to receive gifts from several places but I think it was most likely my wife's father who got it when he was an ambassador and that was in 1960s but he could have received it as a gift as well when he was in asia , however I cannot find any info related to the markings or a similar drawing of the same dragon.

As i said, i like it. Nice five toed dragon and the sacred pearl in the well...just a strange manner in which the characters have been marked on the base

Notice the marks on this one for the Xuantong period.
