antique reverse painting on glass
« on: March 24, 2013, 09:25:35 pm »
hi everyone, i picked this up at a auction yesterday. i thought it was unusual so i bought it. paid $40. they called it a antique reverse painting on glass. i know nothing about it. there are 3 letters on top and a symbol of some kind on bottom. has anyone seen one of these before and have any info. i dont care about value. if i like a item then its worth it to me, would just like to find out some information on it. thank you for any ideas
i left out that its hard to see picture clear unless held up to light

I strictly collect and do not resell, but I still like to know information & value of items I purchased at auctions to see if I did well. Really appreciate your help & advice.

I'm thinking it's from the Holy Name Society.

This is my line of thinking also..as the symbol on the bottom left/right is an orthodox symbol...this has the look of an icon

We looked that up on the link you provided. That is definitely their symbol! Thanks for that information. I am still wondering what time period this may have come from, if it is rare or if there are many out there.  I am thinking I may see if we can contact them.

Hey everyone, this is getting very interesting. we emailed the Holy Name Society and sent these same pics. We were contacted by a Bishop that let us know he forwarded it to the President of the Society. within a hour we received a email from the president. He told us that the picture is of Jesus when he was 12 to 14 years old. He also wants to know what we intend to do with it and that he was going to forward this to his fellow national holy name officers and get back with us. I think i might have finally found a good piece!!! will let you know what happens

That's fantastic! Can't wait to hear what happens. I would also be curious to know if this was a church window or if it had some other function.

That looks like it might have been made-for or salvaged out of a leaded-glass window.

First post says its a plate ??   And the HNS knew about it was in a later post !!  A stained glass window would not be likely, since it is reverse painted !!  Could not have put the painted part inside !!  And unless it was covered on the outside it would not have lasted long when exposed to weather !!  Especially N Eastern weather !!  And it appears to be in pretty good condition !!
