Antique Chair with metal emblems
« on: April 08, 2013, 10:49:48 am »
I have this chair I have stored for over 30 years and have never been able to find out any information on it. I have looked on the web and asked dealers about it. No one recognized it. In one final effort, I am asking if anyone on here knows anything about it? Hate to toss it out and find out I shouldn't have. There are stamps or makers ID's on it that I can find. I took the seat off, which was not the original but was stamped by who made it but can't read it. I have enclosed pictures of the chair and metal emblems one on each side of the back of the chair. Thanks to anyone who can help me with this. Kelly

The metal plaques or roundels represent classical gods. In this case it looks like Mercury/Hermes and Mars/Apollo.

Very nice, very unusual on a chair like this. I would date it to ca. 1890.

Value with a restored seat might be around $100 - $200, depending on where you are.

Thank you so much ghopper1924..I appreciate the info. The seat that was made for it is covered in vinyl I think. It was on the chair when I got it. The wood of the seat is stamped with faint red ink of who made the seat but I can't read it.

Well, I haven`t seen anything with that wave style back !!  I think that's about the right date,, 1890 to 1910 !! I personally think its after 1900 !! But its hard to tell !! Greek mythology figures were extensively used during the Empire revival period but I don`t think this one is that late !!  I certainly wouldn`t trash it !!  Its such a unique design that its well worth keeping and restoring !!

Take a shot in the dark and email this guy with those two pics showing the whole chair and one of the emblems !! He may have an idea of who made it !! You won`t lose anything by trying !!
It is my thought that it may be either an English or French made chair !!  More likely the latter one !!
