Greyhound Sculpture
« on: April 14, 2013, 02:05:00 pm »
I bought this Greyhound sculpture 12 years ago and have never been able to find out anything about it. It appears to made of all brass and measures about
10 1/2" tall
11 1/2" Long counting the legs
4 1/2"  wide at the base
weighs  6.5 lbs

Anyone ever seen one before? there are no markings of any kind on it inside or out. Seems to be made from about 8 pieces going by what I can see inside.

Any information someone might give me about it or point me in the right direction to find out more would be appreciated.  Thank You.

Looks like Shed work...it may appeal to lovers of greyhounds...we have something similar here, its a cat..we use it as a door stop...i don,t see an awful lot of value in it...
I make no excuses,and no apologies....but i like a good Malt,

Not sure if it is a greyhound.

You might want to look at pics of Borzoi or Russian Wolf Hounds!  They have been used in bronze work and brass pieces for centuries - because they are considered to be a very elegant animal that is an avid hunter!

Just google Borzoi Bronze pics.....

Even tho the typical pic of the actual animal has longer hair...you will find pieces with short hair and sleek!!!
I know this because I have a large brass piece that took me a while to figure out what it was.

No solid clues , as to your items' maker , I'd suggest that the canine depicted is a 'Doberman' , ghb ...

Definitely dobe.

Buddy11......the only terrifying animal in terms of a dobe (or any dog) is the two legged one at the other end of the leash. We took in a 9 yr old rescue who was in horrific shape physically (less than 40 lbs) and emotionally and integrated her into our family of 4 very young children. She turned into our nannie dog. ;)

I don't agree with Doberman....just because when doberman's are usually depicted they are cast with the ears up.

Could be a whippet, borzoi, wolf hound, etc.

Here,s what a Doberman should look like..not the way they are in the US...thankfully ear cropping is forbidden in the UK...just like tail docking...

I agree Wullie!

Just like I love a standard poodle with natural and full tail!  We have one the tail was already done...but next one will not be!!!

But...back to you don't normally see any casting done with 'laid back' ears...they usually are what they term "erect" ears.

Looks closer to that than it does to a doberman...thats for sure...and as a whippet is only a smaller version of a greyhound...then I would have to say the original poster may be correct...

You folks sure do know your dorgs way better than me ...
the little sucker still looks like a grumpy dobie to me , though .

Might be an award/trophy plaque ... a novel hat-rack ?

IDK !
