Antique Chair
« on: April 14, 2013, 08:49:09 pm »
Hi All,
My great grandmother had this beautiful chair - she immigrated her from Norway and lived in Staten Island, NY.
I have searched to try to find a similar chair with markings with no luck - does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Can you get some closeups of the details?

Looks like late 19th century walnut or mahogany.

Hi,
If you click on the photo I am able to zoom in on the details more.  I believe it is a carving of an old man winter or north wind face.
There doesn't seem to be any markings on the bottom of the chair.    Thanks.....

I would further narrow the time it was made down to 1875 - 1885. Value would be around $200 or so.

I would agree with value.  There's always a following for furniture with faces.
Here's a somewhat different style:

Could also be a Green Man.  These are the drawer and door pulls on my oak sideboard.....

Can you please post a pic of:  Close up of detailed wood work/detail and picture of the the construction on under side of the seat.

Believe it to be very late 1890's - 1920's.

Don't think so. The paired acanthus leaves and shape of the splats indicate an earlier date.

Corner chair. Around 1880 I would guess. Typical motif from that period. Carved and unusual always sells. Everyone seems to be pretty close on this one, give or take ten years. I like it at around 125.00 to 175.00. Maybe a little higher.

Do you know if she brought this with her from Norway ??  Its not typical American style for that period ,,late 1800`s  ??  Or perhaps had it made here by a Norwegian in a similar style to what was there !!

Agree, late 1800's.  European style decor.

I don't think this is over 100 years old. Seen the way the arms are attached to the back ? Aren't they generally one piece
Same with the seat

Looks later to me
