Young Napoleon Statuette
« on: May 04, 2013, 06:59:10 pm »
Hey, was hoping to find any possible info on this statuette my mother has; she swears up and down that it has some kind of value. The closest thing I can find to a signature is what looks like an X on the bottom of the base; the top parts of the X curve outward, looking like two hockey sticks or golf clubs crossed over each other. Here's some pictures, of course. Took one next to a bottle of furniture polish for a size reference.

Is the mark you are talking about on the foot ??  Upper left of corner ??  Makers marks would be on bottom,, not on foot !!

Blackening,

I think I see the mark on the bottom- do the lines curve like two candy canes or are they angled bends?

I found this resource of porcelain marks: www.oldandsold.com/pottery/germany11.shtml  The link is to page 11 of the German marks because #6 on the page is crossed lines with angles like golf clubs.  Actually on a few of the previous pages there were similar marks listed.  This may give you an idea of who made it.

Does your mom know where it came from?  If so you could check the porcelain marks from that area of the world.  Or how old it is?

Hope the link helps.

I see the mark , but don't 'automatic-pilot' recognize it as an antique one .

Looks as if there was 'painting' over the glazed portions , such as the eyeballs , gold gilding , etc .

It's a bit of an oddball to my eyes , considering its' quality & value (which I have little clue about) , starting from the point that the bust is sitting atop an off-centered integral 'base' , and that the hand that did some of the post-glaze work was none too steady .

I'm betting there's a few like this kicking around the world !

Yeah, more than a few would be my guess.

Late 20th century. None too valuable.

Like most things my mother finds, she found it at a garage sale. She's into collecting figurines(much to my chagrin), and she kept going on and on about this particular statue. I don't have any more information other than what I gave you; the mark is on the very bottom, and it's pretty glazed over. Still, thank you for all the help.

I must be totally blind too Wullie !!   Rubbing would be nice !! Personally,, I do not see quality in this bust and think its a fairly new repro of older piece !!  She probably thinks its the crossed swords Meissen mark !!  But it is not that quality !!  Sorry !!  Wish we could tell her she found a good one !!

Hopefully !

Doubt it's worth a great deal. Doesn't look particularly fine and the socle base looks out of line
