Handcrafted Antique Side Table--Need Help!
« on: May 19, 2013, 03:48:50 pm »
We came across this beautiful old handcrafted wood side table.  Looks to be very old.  All hand work, even the tounge and grooving.  Great carved panels.

Trying to get an idea of era, origin, value.  Would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

Is it a console table ? Do you not have the top ?

I agree it's well carved but it seems to be confused as to it's identity, almost as if some of the work is later than the wood.

I am not sure it is a table as we think of one !! It looks like a stage or theater when looking at the top pic !!  I am making a guess that it was for marionettes !!  From looking at the panels,, if I had to guess origin,, Russia or that area would be at the top of my list !! KC might be of help on this,, she has spent some time there !!  It may have had a removable top that was damaged over the years !! Would help if we knew what the panels represent !!   Another option would be an alter of some type but really don`t think so !!  How big is this piece ??

OK.  This piece is 54 inches long, 20 inches wide and 33 inches tall.

My husband just told me that the folks that owned the barn we got it out of believed it to be 150-200 yrs. old.  But who knows?

I was thinking possibly german?

Panels do not give me that impression !!  Construction is different from German craftsmen that I have seen !!  But will do some research tomorrow !!  Maybe KC will chime in here !!

Console tables can be like this. They can have marble tops which are sometimes broken and too expensive to replace.

The carving looks like it has the psychedelic fluidity of op/pop art of the 60s or 70s rather than Victorian or even pre-Victorian styling.

Perhaps a bit similar but that would not go along with the construction ??

Agreed Mart. The more I look at it the more I agree with Ipcress' quote. Something doesn't add up.

Small, Mart ? It looks quite large judging by other items in the main image.

It looks like bits & pieces to me, someone has taken a panel from a nice old mule chest & some paneling from something else & made a table out of it.  I think the pieces are old, but it's a marriage.  Not being able to see it in person makes it difficult to know for sure.   The carving looks well done.
