goodwill for 9.99.   

think it's plaster, so heavy no markings but is she anybody out of greek mythology?

an added question--how would one hang something so heavy? 

do you think this is old?

Might be a depiction of Artemis (Diana to the Romans) , although she's most frequently depicted with a bow & arrow/quiver & deer ....

fancy--thx for the extra info-I couldn't tell you if she's holding a septor (sp)  or a weapon

is she hand carved do you think?

putting this in a frame, is not a good idea,...mounting it on a back board would be much better...cos by the look of the plaster edge, it is misshapen and not square,..as for being handcarved...i very much doubt it....its more likely to have been cast....to mount this on a back board is relatively simple....if you allow say 4in all round...you can frame a backboard with picture frame moulding..then mount this plaster on the backboard,

Ahhh Wullie...you are taking the "i'm not accepting a challenge route" on this one!  :P

Depends on the look you want.  Mount to a backboard if you want the entire piece to show for a rustic look.  You can even stain it/highlight it with tinted clear coat

For a more finished look you can frame it!

Your choice.

Hard to tell if it is old or newer without a hands-on.  Plaster relief pieces have been around for centuries!!!

thx mart--so heavy wonder what they did with them?  I mean it could tear down a wall heavy.  Its going on the easel for sure.

Yes it was but you would be surprised at all the walls these plaster things hung on !!  Including my mothers !!  It was a cheap material and easy to pour and distress !!  Could get the look of hundred year old stone for pennies !!
