Ceramic Thing
« on: July 04, 2013, 12:19:35 pm »
Here's a tribal looking ceramic thing. I don't know what to call it exactly. It measures to about 6 1/4" tall. Would you know where it may have originated from? Is it just a reproduction? Or is it genuine? How much do you think it's worth? Thank you! :D

I am not sure where you are from but if you are referring to Native American, I don't think so. I can assure you it is not from a prehistoric culture. The motif doesn't look like any Historic NA pottery I have seen either. The better pieces of Historic pottery are usually signed also. I do think it is an attractive piece.....hope someone here can give some input to its origin.

Possibly African but don`t recognize any of the figures !!  It looks like a pretty modern glaze !! Could be that its just an art piece with no particular meaning !!  Is it scratched through the glaze ??

The design isn't painted on, it is scratched in.

Sgraffito is the technique !!  Just means to scratch or scratched !!  Its used in many places !!  The slip is applied then the design is scratched through the color !!

My father was just bugging me. It's something he picked up.
