Error Coke Bottle ???
« on: July 27, 2013, 11:23:48 am »
Hello

I have an old Coca Cola bottle which has a chip in it. When I bought it in a box of other bottles I didn't notice it was chipped. After a few months, I noticed the chip and thought it might have been me. But the chip is really smoothed out. I am wondering if this would be from the factory and they smoothed the chip out and still used the bottle anyway? Does that make a difference in the value? This bottle is from my own personal collection.
I have searched for bottles on the internet with the same kind of chip but I can't find any (only bottles that are bigger then they are supposed to be or something..)

Thanks
Kevin

Nice bottle. It is hard to say if it was a defect or a repair and use. I know that in the 50s, when I grew up, Coke Bottles were returned for a deposit and used over and over. That was a source of income for me. 2 cents each, 5 cents for big ones. If one was chipped without the risk of injury or compromising the product it would probably get re-used and worn from the recycling process. Yours is older, I believe 1900 to 1915, and I think they were returned back then too. Someone with more bottle knowledge here will shed more light on it.

I remember these bottles (sorry Old memory) from maybe the 80's. The clue is the "NO DEPOSIT" at the top of the bottle. These things were made in the millions and I can't see it being worth...well anything.

I can't think that on a "throw-away" from the 60's a glass factory would take the time to correct defects on a individual bottle. I'm sure it's just a fault that slipped past their inspection at the time.

I replied to this last night... not sure where my message went...  ???

I'm not sure where the bottle was manufactured. It doesn't say on the bottle, all it says on the bottom is "Coca Cola LTD." with a few symbols around it. If it will help, I can take a picture of the bottom.

Has anyone seen a bottle from that was hit with a B-B from a B B Gun at just the right angle would make a "similar" mark when it had been sitting out in a very hot field when used for target practice?????

Right on, KC, ..... if it was a piece of flint or obsidian they would call it "napping".

Conchoidal fracture is the secret to knapping - the characteristic breakage of glass from a BB hit. Seen here, the conical spall broken from a piece of glass, with the edges of the cone 110 degrees from the path of the BB. http://www.sterlingsculptures.com/Resources_folder/Knapping_folder/Knapping_1.htm

Just looks like a mold flaw to me !!  Although if it were chipped out a BB gun would be the most likely !!  Strangely enough,, since these bottles were destroyed  and trashed, a few are being sold but not for much !! Keep it a while !!

The bottle doesn't seem broken, but there's a deffect in the glass. It could be like a bruise.

The edges are very very smooth , I couldn't cut myself on it if I tried (not that I want to... just to describe it haha).
