Seeking replacement cup for gilded tea set
« on: August 04, 2013, 03:25:34 pm »
I am seeking a replacement cup for a Central European gilded tea set.

The set, which serves six, was given to my Czech wife by her aunt as a wedding present. The items all have a globe symbol on the bottom (see attached), along with the number 88 in a circle. Th set is probably of Bohemian or Bavarian provenance. I have attached a picture of a cup and saucer. We don't think the set is too valuable in the market, but it has significant emotional value and is something nice to hang on to.

Due to an unfortunate accident, one of the cups broke and I am seeking a replacement. The picture of the broken cup is also attached. If someone can tell me how I might go about procuring a replacement teacup, my wife and I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks a lot for reading!

The globe is kind of like the mark that is actually on the bottoms of the cups, except with more latitudes and longitudes, so it looks a bit denser. I have attached the actual photos of the intact and the broken cup too.

Can you please post a picture of the actual mark?

You might look through these and see if you can find the mark !! Don`t think its in there and still looking but you never know !! Its almost impossible to match these Bohemian pieces !! Can you post some better pics of the unbroken cup and saucer !! As it is we can`t see the pattern !!

Here are two pictures of the symbol. One of them is from a distance - the globe and the number 88 in gold paint. As I looked closer I found potentially a lighter orange (original?) brand underneath. It seems to say Germany and the number 2. It's a 15 piece tea set.

Any ideas?

That top mark may be an import mark !! Can you find one that gives a clearer shot of the other mark !!  Its a common thing to have the import stamp over the makers mark !!

I checked in all the other pieces for a better maker's mark, and other than the picture I posted, I was only able to find the attached picture. It's not much better unfortunately - the symbol is a bit clearer with Germany and the number 2 clearly visible. The coat of arms seems to say M or R but I am not sure.

Any ideas?

The original mark belongs to Unger & Schilde from the town of Roschütz in Thuringia, Germany. It was in use between 1896 and 1968 in umpteen different versions (yours for example only reads 'GERMANY' instead of "Made in Germany" or "Germania"), see here:

Sadly, that does not say who actually (re)decorated the set ...
