Wow! beautiful vases!  Would love to see larger pics of them showing their detail.

Here's a little blurb on the history of the garden stool......

Interesting sapphire. I've been looking at the Qing Dynasty Google images. This what the first article was dicussing so I figured I check it out. He has chinese lanterns that look from that time period. He's giving them to someone so he doesn't care what the value is.

Found a bit larger picture. Tried playing with it to bring out more detail.

Also noticed that the term Famille Rose comes up quite a bit in titles/descriptions.

Here's a beautiful example attributed to the 19th century. (Sold for $2400)

Just found this. http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/17036584_chinese-qing-dynasty-garden-stool

I came across that one.....lot passed. Was curious why when the estimate for sale was quite 'nice'.  Comparing the base on that with the shot you have of your friend's.........his appears aged, while the one up for auction looked much newer. Also the detail on your friend's is more delicate, intricate and 'life oriented'.....as opposed to the bright, ornate overall floral on the listed stool.

Wow, those ones are tiny compared to many others! Not quite 10" high.  'Yours' has more textural detail and I wonder what the significance of the cut out design is and singular or double? Fascinating pieces, especially when think about the detail and it's connection to their beliefs/religion.

Noticed the reference to the eight symbols of buddhism, so did a little searching (curiosity is a curse  :D) and came up with this neat reference. You should do a 'search' of your friend's piece to see if these show up in the detail.

This vase is extremely heavy isn`t it ?? They are not at all alike !!  I am afraid the one Merv has is a reproduction and not all that old !! The vases in your link are porcelain,, that is a light color, white or off white base,, Mervs is a concrete gray and not even glazed on the rim !! You will not find bleeding paint on Chinese vases and the only thing carved looks like the holes that are in it !! Artwork when I enlarged the pics was very poorly done !! Chinese and Japanese artists are perfectionists !!  I think he got taken on this one !!

As I magnified the art work some of the decoration are vegetables. Thanks for your help sapphire. It's funny I thought they were lotus. Lol, I was looking for things in the chart as you suggested. You start seeing all kinds of things! ;D

It's called brushed paint. If you see it in person there are grooves around the the art work. He explained the fakes are just painted. He said his isn't paint, but I can't understand that. There is a texture to the pottery.

Old or not so old ..........it's still beautiful! Sure wouldn't mind it sitting in my bedroom alongside all my 'looks old' oriental stuff.

I have the weird combination of loving Victorian era furniture and asian/east indian artwork..........al ong with a sad lack of knowledge of any of them  :D
