Antique Painting value
« on: August 19, 2013, 06:53:43 pm »
picked this junkin at an estate sale. Have found some values online. Oil on canvas with canvas measuring approximately 14" x 20". Has a Marshall Fields price tag marked $650.00. Looks re-framed. Any opinions

I'm curious as to what that little roundish 'tag' on the back of your item says , corkysgold .....
" Methinks me the 'mental' in sentimental .... "

Good images but could i have one of an area of the painting at an angle, just to see the oil ?

The circular sticker is some sort of association member sticker.

If this is a genuine Crosio...then i,find it hard to believe that its only priced at $650....when some of his works sell for 30 times that price...

The round sticker is a member of the bond street association sticker. I have included the Marshall Field tag and a close up of the painting from the side. I have looked at the painting with a loop and it sure looks like an oil painting to me.

Stop and think !! $650. was a substantial amount in the 1930`s when this was likely sold !!  Can you actually feel the paint ridges ??

There is a paint texture to the surface. My mom is a professional artist who paints in oils so I have some knowledge about paintings. I showed it to her and she agrees that it is a painting. My main concern is that the painting is a vintage reproduction. I paid $85 for the piece.

They did do litho`s on canvas as you can see here !! Best is to take it to a good gallery and have it evaluated !!  We really can`t say yes or no from pics !!

That's vastly superior.

This oil on canvas of a similar subject matter sold for $36,000

http://www.artvalue.com/auctionresult--crosio-luigi-1835-1915-italy-lezione-di-musica-1766161.htm

I've seen a few of his oil on boards go for several hundred or low four figures. My guess is that he was copied and some of the works attributed to him weren't his, hence the huge disparities in price.

That Marshall Field's sticker doesn't look 1930's

Without seeing it first hand, and looking at the condition, i'd say $4,000-6,000 if it's original. My concern would be the Marshall Field's sticker and the Cooling Galleries label. Unlikely to have gone through both places but the gallery label certainly adds value if genuine.

The painter died in 1915 so that would be a concern...
