hi all, well  i will still think if to buy it or not.
my last Q about this watch is if all the part  is original, and as i told this watch not run well now,so in this condition again if all the part are original do u think i can still make some money if i would buy it for 150$ how much do u think this watch are worth now ?
and if the watch will run well how much do u think i can sell it?

i can't buy it less than 150.
btw if u look on the mechanism pic u can see that it says 1878.
i almost sure all that the case is original and i get the feeling that i need to buy it. :)
i will call to the store to ask if there any serial NO, what more info do u think i need to ask for?

thank you all so much for helping.

Hi Artx,

You want to see the inside of the back case. That is where the Longines serial number will probably be found, and that will enable you to date it exactly. It will also tell you if the case is original to the watch. It will hopefully tell you whether the case is silver, or not.
What you probably won't be able to confirm is whether the dec is gold, as many watches of that period were decorated with gold, but without any markings to that effect.

As I mentioned earlier, I'd probably happily pay $150 for it it if it were all OK, but I would buy it at that price to keep, and not sell on.

1878 is the date of the Paris Exposition where the Gold Medal certificate was awarded  !!  Not the date of manufacture which was likely much later !!

Agreed, Mart. Looking at the movement closely, i'd say it was more recent than one might think - case appears older.

I still think that the watch is contemporary with the case ... Artx, I gave you a link, a while back, to the NAWCC and suggested you seek their opinion, they really do know a lot about Longines watches. Take a look at this thread which is about a watch with the same Gold Medal stamp, it is very interesting. If you do buy the watch, take some clear shots of it and post there.

I think a hunter pocket watch of this type ( anywhere from 1885 - 1910 ) would be hallmarked. The seller says it isn't. Suggests to me a cheaper watch and i'm not sure then the Longines movement came with the watch.
You can see tiny scratch marks round the screws, and someone has been using a knife or similar to open the case

The more they've shown and told us about the watch, the less valuable it's become

I have seen those old style cases but made as steel or plated repros

i'd like to see pics of the case interior and the back

Hi Artx,
I'm not suggesting that you should be dishonest and lie, but maybe you are being a little too honest in focusing on the value of the watch, that might make people think that they are being used. With just the pictures and asking their opinion about whether they think the watch is all original you might have got a bit more info, but you really would have needed a shot of the inside of the case.
As  a buy to 'keep and use', if it is original, then it seems fine at that price, but as I mentioned a few days back,  if you are intent on re-selling for a profit then you are taking a big gamble.

I would not buy it at the sellers price !! Too many "if`s" !!!  I  would just make an offer of $75. and if he says no then let him have it for lunch and walk away !!  Sometimes its better to just pick up your marbles and go home !!

I think that is a wise decision !! But you still have to think about repair costs !! If you pay $150. and repair costs $50. or more,, that is barely break-even !!  You have no guarantee of what it will sell for !!
