Antique(?) Mahogany sideboard

Hi All,

First time poster! Thanks in advanced for the replies.

I've recently acquired this cabinet/sideboard, but I'm not sure of the origin of it. I believe the front and top is a decorative Mahogany Veneer. The seller of the item claimed he obtained it from the 60's in Italy but it looks older than that? The sideboard weighs a tonne.

I've tried googling keywords but come up with nothing, so any clues would be greatly appreciated.

Not an antique, but vintage for sure. 60s Italy sounds right. Nice flame mahogany!

I agree !!  The style would verify that time period !!  Very nice sideboard !! Beautiful wood !!

most likely the carcase is made of plywood and block board...and cheaper softwoods.....then veneered....

Furniture doesn`t have to be super old to be good quality !!  Mid century furniture is quite popular with some collectors and stands to increase in value !! If yours is a solid wood base,,and I think it is, rather than plywood or chip board of any kind,, hang on to it !!

Whats an easy way to tell the wood underneath a veneer?

For starters, move the item out from the wall and look at the back.

Yes !!   Then take the drawers out and look at the underside of the top, the edges of the doors ect !! You can see if the wood is all one piece or if its layered !!  Layered wood can be plywood, if it looks like a bunch of small chips glued together, that's chipboard !!   As Bigwull said its not unusual for different woods to be used on case frame, you just want it to be solid wood !!  I don`t think you need to worry though !!
