Here is one for Henry
« on: September 06, 2013, 08:34:39 am »
Hi Henry, hopefully you'll be looking in on this site again soon. Here's one for you as I know that you are a specialist. I already know a fair amount about this coin:

GERMAN STATES HESSE-DARMSTADT 10 Gold Mark
Ludwig IV  Grosgherzog von Hessen  1878
Weight: 3.98g and 90% gold
Mintage: 132,000

What I have no real idea about is the grade of the coin. The Obverse is in good crisp condition, but there is quite a bit of wear to the crown and coat of arms.

How would you grade it? Apologies for the photos, I have more high definition ones, but too large to upload here.

Hi mart, you may recall he posted a couple of weeks back, it was a dish with a medallion centrepiece, but no-one could shed any light on it. He is actually a numismatists with his own web-site.

Hello, it's me!

Took a while to find this.

High grade coins are hard to grade from pictures, but it certainly looks EF. There appears to be some minimal wear (flatness to ear lobe and elements of the arms on the reverse).

I'd be up for it.

Hi Henry,

Thanks for taking a look. I was thinking of selling it, but if it was worth not much more than scrap then I would hold on to it, what with the dive gold has taken recently, but if it's EF then I might research what it could fetch.

Many thanks again.
