Antique Hutch
« on: September 08, 2013, 12:08:50 pm »
My dad found a hutch at a yard sell last week. He payed 250 for it and the story goes the man got it when he was 4 years old in California. He's in his late sixties now living in Indiana, and the back of it says Scottsburg IND on it. It also says Dr. Ollie or Oliver. 4951 is also on it. We were wondering if anyone had any info on this piece.

Looks to be American Oak from about 1920 give or take a few years !!  Are you going to complete the restoration ?? Not a lot of value but nice furniture if restored properly !!

Somebody in the past had started to strip it,  by the looks of it, then gave up ... there is an awful lot of work to be done to get it back into shape, but it could be nice in time. I'd place it earlier than mart, I'd say turn of the century, but difficult to tell from the pics.
$250 does sound an awful lot to pay at a yard sale for this piece ... did you get the price right figure that your dad paid?

It looks to me like it should have a board across the back of the top.

It would look great if refinished to Golden Oak and new "repo" hardware.

Agree with the early 20th/oak evaluation. Could be honey, or could be darker: either way would work.  And yes, it did have a crest across the top.
