Found antique store in our town
« on: September 11, 2013, 03:33:21 pm »
Until yesterday I didn't even know this store was here and I'm told it's been in business for 10yrs. So we stopped in to see what they had. The first item, the cake plate is Mikasa though it's not antique I really liked it. The 2nd item, there seems to be some debate on the Early American Pattern Glass FB forum as to whether its Floral Oval AKA Cane with Sprig by New Martinsville or Buttons and Bows. The third bowl, I think it's Mikasa also but not sure. The fourth is crystal and haven't found that yet either. I did get in my McCain's Field Guide to Pattern Glass today so at least I'm on my way to helping myself. Still have six books on the way in.

I'll never be as good as some of you are but at least I'll have the references at hand if I think I can help someone.

NICE!! your first and third are indeed made by Mikasa!! Your second piece was produced by Higbee Glass Company and then after by  New Martinsville Glass Company. This pattern is also known as Floral Oval, Cane and Sprig, Pittsburgh Daisy and Spray and Cane. The pattern is a wonderful button cane and zippered ovals that encase an embossed floral sprig and is a very busy pattern. Your second & third piece are lovely examples of EAPG. Just keep on getting books on glass  and read everything and handle as much glass as you can  :D you are well on your way !!

Thanks Wendy, on the 2nd piece, I've been told that there should be a 'bee' somewhere on the bottom of the bowl but can't find it. I suppose then that if it's not there then it is one made by New Martinsville? The fourth piece pictured is actually crystal. I'll post another photo showing a close up of the bottom and a side view. I've gotten in one of the seven glass books I ordered, McCain's Field Guide to Pattern Glass. Hope some of the others come in before next Tuesday, we're heading out shopping.

On the one you just posted, reproductions of almost the same identical pattern were made in the 60`s  !!  Very minor differences so look closely if you find this one again !!
