Help with Ceramic Dish from National Museum of the Phillipines
« on: September 19, 2013, 11:56:18 am »
I found this little gem on the mantle of an old house. The owner was a world traveler in the 50s and 60s. It is marked "National Museum of The Phillipines Manilla, RP, Registration, NO. HE 182, 258" the other sticker says "1408," and something I can't make out. Can anyone help out with any other information on this piece? Ive

And what exactly is it ?? Pot ?? Need size !!  It a common thing for museums to sell off items that are not quality enough to be used !! People donate all kinds of items to museums,,they just have so much space and storage would go to the better pieces !!  Many time they have multiples of a single type item and they will reserve the better one !! Sell of what they don`t need !!  They can`t keep everything !!

Do you think this is ancient pottery? Perhaps gem isn't the word. But more information would help classify it as "far from a gem." When I asked the man about it, he said, "I may have stolen that from a museum." He is quite a character.

No need to back peddle ... many people would think of it as a little gem, it really is each to their own. Can you describe it, has it been glazed?

It does look as if the top (?) has been glazed !! Would not call it ancient pottery,,just primitive pottery !!  Maybe last few hundred years !!  Can you take a side view ?? Its hard to get a sense of it from these pics !!

It looks to have a sage glaze on it. And a design in the center design that looks a bit like a sand dollar. There is corrosion on it, which leads me to believe it may have been buried at some point and recovered in a dig or something. Honestly, I'm amateur at best with these things. I emailed the museum, but never heard back.

When you say 'corrosion' you're not saying that it's metal?

No , but on the first picture, you can see the chip on one side and the other part has kind of bubbled out and become porous.

Myracles described it as resembling a sand dollar, but I'm not too sure
