Old Chinese Panel Carving?
« on: September 19, 2013, 07:53:38 pm »
I purchased this today at the TS, it was only 60 cents so what the heck, why not... Anyways, I think it's an old Chinese panel carving but I'm not sure.

The panel measures about 8 inches wide by about 5 inches high. It has what looks like old green paint around the sides with small pieces of shells or MOP in the green painted area I think.

Does anyone know if the figures are Chinese and if it's a Chinese carved panel and when it may have been made? Also, would this panel have been in a frame, door, chest or something else?

Thanks!
Kevin

Mart might be right, but as the photos are quite 'flat' it's difficult to tell whether it is a lid that would have fitted into the top of a box.

There's a mark round the underneath which is common for covers, like a natural margin ! Looks like the edges are sloped ?

Mart, could be a box cover... It looks like it may have had some type of frame to it at one time or have been inserted into some other type of wood work. The front has a small unpainted area around the edge border and a darker edge stain or age mark on the back of it.

Mariok54, sorry about the images, I've included some more herewith.

Ipcress, there is a mark round underneath, it's a darker stain/age line mark and is not recessed. You are correct, the edges are sloped.

Great buy!  I have seen a few around my area.  It was most likely  on a cabinet as an inlay.  It's in very good condition!!  Very nice!

Thanks Icedgold10, that's what i was thinking it may have been made for (cabinet inlay / for a door). It just doesn't seem like it was used as a lid the wear isn't right for me but I guess it could have been a lid or something else.

Whatever it is, it's decorative, and for 60c you can't go wrong!
When you spend as much time searching for items on-line, as some people do on this forum, you never know, something similar might turn up one day
