W. H. Chandler pastel or painting?
« on: October 11, 2013, 08:14:46 pm »
Sending pictures of a W. H. Chandler piece. I have not taken it out of the frame and am not sure if this is a pastel  or a painting? The picture measured across the glass top is 9 1/2 inches.
Research says the pastel fruit still life by Chandler are more unusual. Can you comment on which medium and the value? Thank you!

Hard to tell from a picture but it has characteristics of a pastel.  The way some of the background strokes look.  Also, it looks more flat like a pastel.

I'm sure you already have this link:

Good information, and a lot of examples of Chandler's work.

You may find this interesting about Chandler !! Seems he employed a company of approx. 20 artists to do most of his work !! Even though it seems he did sign the works himself !! So your still life most likely was done by an employee rather than Chandler himself !! Most all of the pastels he personally painted were larger ones !! These were sold through Marshall Fields, Sears and others !!

Thanks to all of you for taking the time!! So, since he had others working for him, how would anyone be able to tell if Chandler himself did the painting or is the size of the painting the key to that?

be content that your picture has his signature....any prospective buyer...will probably know what Chandler did.....for you to find out if this particular piece was painted by Chandler himself...could be a costly business....and unless you are prepared to throw more money at it....live with it....its a Chandler ...simples...

I agree with Bigwull !! However since yours is a smaller piece and the fact that others did many of the pastels that carry his signature,, it will affect the value !! The link I gave gives a value for the smaller ones at $200. to $400. but personally in todays market I think $150. to $250. would be more in the expected range !!
