A lithograph behind a print!
« on: October 25, 2013, 10:52:02 am »
:) I bought an old print(1951) Currier and Ives Snowy Morning for 3 dollars. Mostly because I loved the old frame. When I took it apart there was what I believe and a couple of people have told me is an original Currier and Ives lithograph. The title is Little Rosebud. The only Little rosebuds I can find are colored, and mine is not. I'm trying to see if it is worth selling this, or If I want to keep it. The address is Nassau NY See pics.
Any idea on this?

Thanks

edit- the marks on her face are on the glass, not on portrait.

This should give you info !!  Currier and Ives was only the print maker,, they were not artists !!  They had a staff of different artists !! Value in their prints depends on the number done and the rarity !! Although most are a few dollars at best !!

Thanks Mart, where did you see the "few dollars" the prices on the link you sent are the prices they sold for originally.

Usually I just check ebay and see if any are selling !! They really don`t have to be the same one as long as its a similar genre !! Of all that are listed only two have bids one is of horse racing at $20.+ the other is a large chromolithograph of the USS Constitution at $199. Although there are all kinds of starting prices,,it doesn`t mean a thing if no one is actually buying them,, and they are not !! That's why you can`t go by any items "book value"  I can ask whatever price I want,, but getting someone to pay it is a different matter !! Doesn`t mean its worth what I ask !!

Mart, same list on all the others.  But the bottom of the item being shown only shows 1 street while the others show 2 streets (cross streets)!  They generally would note this wouldn't they?

I noticed that as well- but this address is commonly missing the cross street. http://goo.gl/CvdTEX

These lithographs, much like maps from the period, were printed and then later hand coloured.

They're worth very little these days, appearing dated and unsuitable for modern homes. People would rather have a print of a Miro or one of Rothko's ' liquorice allsort ' works ( look him up, Wullie...you'll see what i mean  ;D )

There are several auction results for these Currier & Ives in the last few years and they've often failed to receive a bid.
