Cast iron last supper fire back plate/ plaque?
« on: October 25, 2013, 06:43:37 pm »
I got this cast iron gold tone last supper fire back plate or plaque with cut outs.  I can't make out the stamp on the back and can't get a good picture of it.  It says something prod inc.  Trying to figure out age, origin and value.  Can't find an other one on the web like it.  Measures approx. 14" x 8 1/2 ".

its origin..is the easy part....it was part of a cast iron fireplace...that..i s probably no longer in one piece...and then someone sprayed it gold and had it hanging on a wall,....date wise...early 1900....value if stripped of all that crap....then blackened and polished with zebrite....could see it fetching £100+....or more to a religeous fanatic.... :D
I make no excuses,and no apologies....but i like a good Malt,

Nice!  I got it for $5.99.  It's a nice piece but very heavy.

Very heavy...I should bloody well hope so....after all its cast iron...do yourself a favour...either try and strip that s***..off or get it shot blasted,...then paint it black with matt black metal paint..and then polish it with zebrite...and then for that extra touch mount it on a nice piece of wood...with a margin of approx 2in all round...then punt it...or leave it unmounted and it,ll still fly off the shelf...

Scratch a small place on the back and see if its white under the paint !! I think its plaster, not cast iron !! We had the same plaque back in the 50`s hanging in our dining room !! About the same weight as cast iron and often mistaken !!

It is for sure cast iron not plaster.  There is some scratched paint on it.  Metal all the way.

pays to check previous posts...."what part of metal all the way"..did,nt you get ;D...as for being way too small...its not...mines has a back plate of 16in x 9.1/2....this one here...is 14in x 14in....i,ve also seen bigger ones...and smaller ones.....it could also be part of the hood....of a cast iron insert...

Because the one we had in the dining room was also gold..identical !! Is there a way to hang it ?? Can`t think of any company that would have put the Lords Supper on an item intended for a fire !! Very disrespectful !!

Disrespectful you say....through who,s eye,s....i can think of far worse things that have been done....with religeous items....than sticking this on a fire...If indeed that,s what it is....but having said that....there are many more where this one came from....

I have seen some old plaques like this that were actually surrounded by framing...but not with the cut out sections.  The cut out make me think candle, fire...like indicated above for the stoves.

But this one is cast iron?  Heavy?  Not just metal?
