So glad that we are keeping your blood pumping today Wullie! :)  Just trying to help figure it out...not out to send you reeling big guy!

There were "other metals" used that aren't as heavy as cast iron and if someone is familiar with items of different metals, (which I am guessing that Icedgolf10 is fairly knowledgeable from the items she has been exposed to/sells, etc).

Just for fun here is the definition
Grey cast iron

Main article: Grey iron

Grey cast iron is characterised by its graphitic microstructure, which causes fractures of the material to have a grey appearance. It is the most commonly used cast iron and the most widely used cast material based on weight. Most cast irons have a chemical composition of 2.5–4.0% carbon, 1–3% silicon, and the remainder is iron. Grey cast iron has less tensile strength and shock resistance than steel, but its compressive strength is comparable to low and medium carbon steel

Msrt...thanks for the laugh!!!  (I needed it...just had a major hail storm - hailed over 8 minutes - olive size hail)  Have 1 bedroom soaked (the wind blew open the porch door and branches/shredded leaves, etc...came in as well as lots of water.  And of course better half is out of the continental US!!!  And our wet=dry vac is broken! The trees/shrubs/flowers are exfoliated pretty good and lots of clean up tomorrow!)

Hope you fared well by the time it hit you Mart!

Grey cast iron

Most cast irons have a chemical composition of 2.5–4.0% carbon, 1–3% silicon, and the remainder is iron.

And for some more fun,  ;D ;D .... the old cast iron contained potassium which made the liquid iron more fluid so that it would flow into all sections of those intricate molds before it would harden up.

That is why all of the repro kitchen gadgets, etc. are being made in Mexico, etc.

Yep Cogar...remember about that potassium!

Mart, we stomped towels for hours last night soaking up and have lots of fans going!  Been raking leaves and picking large limbs up.  Just had the roofers leave...ceiling in office and laundry room are wet from a slight ongoing leak that became a big one yesterday...(They couldn't find it in the past with the new roof...found it now and have to repair the roof/ceilings/walls.)  Some of my favorite rose bushes were broken to pieces!  :)  But all are safe and things can be fixed!!!  So, life is good!

Been there before.  Glad you are ok because that is what counts.  Things can be fixed a little at a time.
